According to information released earlier this week, Elk Grove showed a mixed bag of increases and decreases in 10 categories of reported crime from 2011 to 2012.

That information was reported in the  FBI's 2012 Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report for cities with populations greater than 100,000. Elk Grove had decreases in violent crimes, murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault and motor vehicle theft. The biggest drop came in the motor vehicle theft category going from 324 reported incidents in 2011 to 212 in 2012.

The city experienced a slight increase in property crimes, burglary, larceny-theft and arson. The number of reported arson incidents went from 14 in 2011 to 26 in 2012.
