With the rainy season dry spell record of 44 days about to be broken and Governor Jerry Brown's drought emergency declaration, the Elk Grove City Council will issue a non-binding water conservation declaration at their next meeting.
Unlike other municipalities, Elk Grove residents are serviced by two different water purveyors that are not associated with the local city government. In the case of Elk Grove, residents are serviced by Sacramento County Water and the Elk Grove Water District (EGWD). Additionally, several rural residents use well water.
By issuing the declaration, the city will join several other agencies urging users to voluntarily conserve water resources by 20 percent. Folsom, which relies on water from an already depleted Folsom Lake, has imposed mandatory 20 percent reductions.
The EGWD relies primarily on groundwater and is believed to be less vulnerable to cities like Folsom which draw on surface water. At their January 22 meeting, the EGWS will consider passing a resolution calling for a 20 percent voluntary user reduction.
The Elk Grove City Council will meet at City Hall on Wednesday, January 22.

Let's not forget that those with the big fancy lawns whose water comes from wells need to conserve as well. No preaching from the dais about conversation for the little people when your sprinklers are running and we can see them from Sheldon Road.
