Conventional wisdom with regards to debates in an election is not to indulge an opponent if you are heavily favored to win. California voters saw this last year when Democratic incumbent Sen. Diana Feinstein refused to debate and subsequently swamped Republican challenger Elizabeth Emkin.
With nothing to seemingly gain in what is now a blue state and district, two Democratic candidates for California's Ninth Assembly, Elk Grove Vice Mayor Jim Cooper and Sacramento City Council Member Darrell Fong, have reportedly not acknowledged an invitation to participate in a candidate forum with two of their Republican challengers, Lodi's Manuel Martin and Elk Grove's Tim Gorsulowsky.
Political newcomers Martin and Gorsulowsky will participate in a candidate forum on Monday, January 27, hosted by the California Tea Party affiliated Lodi Citizens in Action Group. The top two finishers in the June primary, regardless of party affiliation, will advance to November general election.
Martin's press release regarding the forum says "The democrats [sic] in typical fashion have decided they don’t want to address the good people of the 9th district and have not even responded to the invitation. What kind of future representatives will these democrats [sic] be when they won’t event show up to meet the people while they are campaigning? This is a very typical elitist mentality; the two Democrats Jim Cooper and Darrell Fong should do better than just hide in the shadows."
The Lodi forum will be held at the United Congregational Christian Church, 701 South Hutchins St. and starts at 6:30 p.m.

So much for letting the people know where they (Fong and Cooper) might stand on the issues, why, and how they will implement them. Guess they figure all the voters need to know is what's on the billboards and glossy flyers. Keep em' deaf, dumb, and silent.
It is understandable that Cooper and Fong won't go to this forum, it looks to be sponsored by the Tea Party. Even though they are not likely to sway a soul in that audience, it nonetheless better to good in front of a hostile audience nd state clearly what you stand for. Last time I checked, Lodi was in the 9th district too.
