February 16, 2014 | UPDATED

In honor of Presidents' Day, Elk Grove News will be conducting its own version of the Iowa Straw Poll.

Every four years Republicans in the Hawkeye state stage a straw poll as a means for Presidential aspirants to test the waters and more importantly, let local GOP chapters raise cash. For this election year, EGN will be staging an ongoing series of short-term straw polls.

Given the District Four race already has three entrants and is quickly heating up, our first short-term poll will gauge interest in candidates Nancy Chaires, Steve Ly and Charles Shanks.

Obviously this poll is unscientific and more of a combination beauty test and organizational gauge. Nonetheless, over time they may be able to measure interest in candidates.

Our first poll opened a few hours ago and will stay open until 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 18. On Tuesday we will post the results and be open for comments.

As they say in Chicago, vote early and often.

The poll and  the polling device installed, while unscientific, allow for only one vote per device.

I'll vote Pablo.

A vote for Chaires is a vote for Pablo--a 2 fer!

Looks like Ly is doing what he did at the South County Dem Club. There he paid for people to sign up with the club, paying their dues, and busing them in to vote for him. Looks like the same thing here. I wonder if there is going to be massive registration/change of address filings with the Sacramento County Voters Registrar's Office so those very same people can vote "in Elk Grove" whilst living elsewhere? I think it's a fair question given past history/performance.

EGN... Me thinks your straw poll is a bit flawed. Even if we assume the "one vote, one device" can't be easily gamed (which it can) the poll doesn't restrict non-locals from voting. It's easy to run up the score when you can enlist friends and family from afar.
Unscientific entertainment, sure. I'm laughing! Maybe we could buy a botnet to run up the votes!

Does this mean Ly is more organized and he has more friends?

@ Anonymous "one vote, one device"

Assuming Pablo only has one computer and one posting handle.

Anon 14:38 my apologies. The poster of 19:31 chose to use my name and your post to slam another individual. Quite sorry. I now understand why people post here anonymously; sadly the haters and the sycophants make it impossible to express an opinion or have a legitimate discussion.

The real Phil Meeker, thank you for the apology. Nothing posted on here is legitimate, just cheap entertainment to slander each other. Probably 3 same guys posting on these comments.

Wow! Nancy Chairies is losing by a very significant margin. This is embarrassing, I hope the best for her.

@ Phil Meeker, did you witness that yourself at the South Dem Club?

concern voter, this is what my source told me. I suspect that Ly has no integrity, accountability, and respect. I am not sure why Mayor Davis and Roger Dickenson retract their endoresment from Nancy, but Pablo and his camp will not take this laying down.

Honestly, this poll typifies the garbage that is EGN. EGN is opinuendo (opinion and innuendo) blogger, masquerading as "news." The "reporting" is riddled with logical fallacies to promote a personal agenda... The main objective? Drive traffic to increase ad revenue. (Seems you're doing well, EGN!)
It does some good things - it allows a place for loonies to speak their mind in a relatively safe environment.
But, anyone who takes this goofy attempt at a "straw poll" seriously, needs to adjust their medication.
Meanwhile, enjoy the show...

Aaaah Anon 20:39, looks like you forgot those meds again. We all knew this poll was unscientific, it even says so in the post. Sorry you took it so personally. Relax and enjoy the day.........I'm sure that is what Nancy is doing.

People, I think many of you are not seeing the big picture. It's all a numbers game. Take a look at the demographics and who is organizing Steve Ly's campaign? This is the young people of today, college students, young adults who feel disenfrenchised and are sick and tired of the status quo.
If Steve Ly can mobilized the, often ignored, youth votes, there is no stopping him. A vote is a vote, whether it's from a 65 or an 18 year old that he can get out of high school or college. Someone take a look at how many 18-25 years old out there these days?? V

Never underestimate the women voters here in Elk Grove. A little history on past women city council candidates and how well they did with little or no money will tell you that. Maybe, just maybe, we have it all in Nancy Charies.

Nancy is intelligent, experienced, understands governance and business, land use and planning, and she appeals to all voters, young, old and in between. And oh yes, she also happens to be a woman.

And better still, she won't jump ship in two years. Can Steve Ly say the same? No, he cannot not!

With online voting registration these days, I'm sure there is a significant bump in the number of 18-25 year olds first time voters.

Many of you don't believe in the power of this young group, I urge you to attend one of Steve Ly's campaign meetings, it is 70-80% people who are under 30. Most of them are either single young professional or college students.

It is the power of these students and young adults that brought about the landslide victory over Jake Rambo and it will be the same result with Nancy Chaires.

There is a new political machine brewing in the background in Northern California. It looks like Steve Ly's has discovered it.

If these young voters are willing to join the South Dem Club to send the opposition a message you bet they will come vote. Look at the results of this online beauty contest, an omen of things to come? Looks very convincing I would say.

Nancy Chaires loses beauty contest by 156 votes!

Don't ever count Nancy out, just sipping our latte's and smiling at y'all. You know "women rule" don't you and the kids always ask Momma's opinion before they vote.
