New Drive-thru Coffee Kiosk Planned For Elk Grove

At tonight's Elk Grove zoning administrator meeting, a design review for a new drive-thru coffee kiosk will be heard.

The proposed kiosk, which will be an Oregon-based Dutch Brothers outlet, seeks plan approval for a drive-thru coffee outlet on the corner of Elk Grove Boulevard and East Stockton Boulevard. The project is considered an in-fill development is therefore exempt from CEQA review.

The kiosk is located on the former site of the Pizza Barn and is part of larger redevelopment project on the site of a former CalTrans service yard.

Mayor Davis believes Grace's competitive advantage is quality roasting.
Dutch Brother's first outlet in the Elk Grove-South Sacramento area will be located less than one-mile from Elk Grove sole drive-thru outlet, Grace Coffee Roasters. Elk Grove Mayor Gary Davis, who owns Elk Grove-based Grace and a drive-thru outlet on the corner of Elk Grove Boulevard and Elk Grove-Florin Road, said he believes the physical location of Dutch Brothers will be more of a competitive threat to coffee outlets on the west side of Highway 99.

Davis also said he believes Grace will have a competitive advantage over Dutch Brothers by offering a more distinct, high-quality product.

"I have been to their shops before and think they do a pretty good job," Davis said.  "However, Grace Coffee Roasters difference is that we use the highest quality, Elk Grove roasted, coffee beans and blend them fresh to then be hand-crafted by expert baristas into a cup of pure Grace."

Tonight's meeting will be held at the city council chamber at city hall and starts at 6:30 p.m. Davis said if the matter comes before the city council, he will recuse himself from the matter.

The biggest problem with Grace Coffee Roasters is the ingress/egress particularly in the morning traffic flow (to 99).
It seems that Dutch Brothers could have the problem licked as they can use the center turn lane to get back to EG Blvd.
All that said, I doubt it will impact GCR much... as they are already missing out on that flow of traffic. Given the constraints, I would bet the most morning traffic GCR gets is due to parents turning from EG Blvd to the South to drop their kiddos off at EGHS.

Welcome to the world of free-market capitalism. It's tough weaning yourself off the public sector trough of free money huh!

In reading their web site it seems Dutch Brothers is more than just a place to pick up a cuppa joe. A welcome addition to our community.

What a backhanded and not-so-subtle insult, Mayor Davis.

How tacky and rude for our Mayor to diss a potential new business by saying he thought his coffee selections were better! OMG

I am not much of a coffee aficionado, milkshakes are more my thing, but I'll try it out to see how it compares one of these days.

I think we have all become well acquainted with Mayor Davis' classless acts over time...he's just a country boy. Every time he speaks he puts his foot in his mouth.

Davis is such a rube!

Anon @ 13:40, it's no big deal that he said that. Any business owner is going to say their product is better.
Anon @ 17:05, how did he put his foot in his mouth? He didn't. It sounds like you're saying that to put your foot in your mouth. Nice try.

Anon 9.07, have to disagree. First and foremost...he is the MAYOR of our city and a business owner second. In that position you support any and all businesses that come to our city even when they are in competition with you. That is what is called "integrity" and something we should insist on in a Mayor!

I lived in EG for years and have been to Grace once! I didnt like it. There is never anyone there. I now live in Sacramento/Land Park and I drive to Dutch Bros on Madison (20 min) just to get coffee. Dutch Bros is amazing coffee. They were also voted Best Coffee in Sac last year....beating Starbucks. Dutch Bros does an amazing job. Everyone is super friendly, coffee is delish and more importantly they help out the community. They did a fundraiser for a sick child raising 19,000 to help with medical bills. Something I have NEVER seen Starbucks or Grace do that. Also Dutch Bros prices are better than Starbucks and the coffee is always consistant. Bring DB to EG and watch them take over!

I can't wait for Dutch bros coffee to go into Elk Grove! They are amazing. They're roasted fresh daily and have direct relationships with the coffee bean farmers in El Salvador Columbia and Brazil. I heard a week after they open they're going to do a proceeds day and donate all the money to Elk Grove high school! Dutch bros is going to be the place to be!

Mayor Davis...oh my! He may need to borrow a line from the Dutch Creed "To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own"
Dutch Bros has the highest quality Rainforest Certified coffee, Organic Teas, Real Fruit Smoothies, their own energy drinks and more. With phenomenal customer service and a guarantee to satisfy, give it a shot! Best part of Dutch Bros? They give back over a million annually to the local community, schools and more. What's not to love? :) Best of luck to all the coffeee companies out there!
