In a ranking released yesterday, Folsom and Roseville placed 22nd and 32nd respectively on the list of America's 50 Best Cities to live.

The list, which was posted on 247WallSt.com, is for cities with a population of over 65,000 people. With a population of 160,000, Elk Grove did not crack the top 50 and the study did not rank cities missing the cut.

The study looked a range of factors including employment growth, poverty, crime rates, access to recreation and attractions, education and affordability. The study's methodology can be viewed here.

While Folsom and Roseville rated unfavorably in housing affordability, both were cited for high income levels, low poverty rates, higher educational attainment levels, higher standardized testing scores and access to entertainment and recreational amenities.

Other California cities making the top 50 included Camarillo, Chino, Santa Clarita and Temecula. The study notes that none of the country's largest cities like New York, Los Angeles or Chicago made the list because of high crime rates.

No surprises there. We consider getting a Costco, Black Bear, etc. as higher quality retail. How do I know that? Weell, Darrell Doan said, “Our residents are demanding more and higher quality retail options and this project fills both of those needs". He was speaking of Costco....

Now I shop at Costco occasionally, but have never considered it as higher quality. I believe they even list themselves as a wholesale store.

Wait till we get our sports facilities, plus the Developers aren't quite done with us yet. We'll not only crack the top 50, we'll be in the top 5. Besides, once executive housing gets built, all the Bay Area CEOs will take notice. Just wait!

We congratulate on neighbors on this honor, but I think it's important to clarify the methodology for our residents left wondering what happened to Elk Grove...

To determine America’s 50 best cities to live in, 24/7 Wall St. considered the roughly 550 cities that the U.S. Census Bureau reported as having populations more than 65,000 residents in 2014. Only the top performing city in each county was considered in our ranking. In other words, once Folsom was rated as the best city within Sacramento County, no other city within Sacramento County with a population over 65,000 residents (Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova and Sacramento) could be included in the ranking. We very well could have been above Roseville in the ranking, but we will never know because of that restriction. I did not find a spreadsheet that showed how each of the 550 cities fared in the ranking. The link to the full article is http://247wallst.com/special-report/2015/11/05/americas-50-best-cities-to-live-2-2/#ixzz3qkBwbW54

As far as Joe Taxpayer is concerned, our home is the most valuable asset we own and is the strongest indicator of how the city is being planned. Soccer or no soccer, diving board or no diving board, my property value is king.

Median home value (Zillow):

Elk Grove: $349,800
Roseville: $378,900
Folsom: $445,600

Mr. or Ms. Ice Rink brings up a subtle, but important point.

As long as Elk Grove remains committed to building lower-end starter homes, and make no mistake that is what the SOI is about, we will continue to lag our brethren in Folsom and Roseville with regards to home values. The type of employer that Elk Grove hopes to attract here is not heavy industry were lower end housing might make sense, but rather information or medical technology type jobs. As long as we continue to expand and build lower end homes, have no cultural amenities, we will never be an attractive destination for these companies. They want cultural amenities along with executive housing and something different that suburban sprawl. Something this city is lacking.

Nobody else seems interested in doing this but I would like to thank Kristyn for clarifying the methodology used. To be honest, I can understand ranking Folsom above Elk Grove but I think we are higher than Roseville.

I understood the study's methodology that was mentioned in the EGN article, but thank Kristyn for taking the time to comment for those who didn't read it. I would have to disagree with SteveB6509 in thinking Elk Grove would rank higher than Roseville. We have a long ways to go before that ever happens. When I don't have to leave EG to do much of my shopping and entertainment.....except for groceries and gas, we might be heading in that direction.

Elk Grove is South South Sacramento

This if for Proud to be led! Please you need to get your head out of the sand. You are exactly the reason the mayor and council members are so full of themselves.

Wake up and smell the roses. Elk Grove its a mess because of the developers, the money the give the council members for their respective war chests and the poor turn out at city council meetings when important thing are discuss and voted on.

Look out for the sales tax increase because our piggy bank is nearly empty and the grandiose plans will never be completed without it. The developers SOI that will go before LAFCO is just another example of developer control to build, build, build cheap homes.

Glad to no longer be an Elk Grove resident.

I have no idea who “Proud to be Led” is, but in my opinion, in reading, any yes, enjoying, his/her posts, PTBL is mastering the art of political satire/sarcasm in getting people to see our local government, and its actions, through his/her comments.

Sometimes sarcasm doesn’t translate in print, but if you read the posts out loud, adding sarcasm in just the right places, the political satire is not lost.

Elk Grove is not the south South Sacramento.

It is Modesto north.
