Walmart Manager, Boyfriend Arrested For Apparent Inside Cash Room Robbery

Gilbert Smith

March 16, 2016 |

In what appears to be an inside job, two suspects were arrested yesterday morning in connection with the armed robbery of the cash room of an Elk Grove Walmart store.

The two suspects arrested were 33-year old Shenita Marie Barnes of Sacramento, a Walmart manager, and her 45-year old boyfriend, Gilbert Earl Smith (pictured above). Barnes was arrested at the Elk Grove Boulevard store where the robbery took place and Smith at his Sacramento residence.

In that early morning incident on Tuesday, February 9, Smith allegedly made his way into the cash room with a copied management key. Once inside the room, Smith brandished a handgun and demanded cash.

After employees complied, Smith left the store and his image was captured on a surveillance camera.

During their investigation, detectives from the Elk Grove Police Department developed and obtained information that identified Smith as the suspect responsible for the robbery. Detectives were also able to connect Barnes involvement in the robbery.

Both suspects are being held at the county jail on $1 million bail for armed robbery and conspiracy charges but are not eligible for bail. Arraignment for Barnes and Smith is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.

  8. Wow the 3/19/2016 5:00PM comment says it all. However, the strike information is NOT accurate. When Gilbert was originally sentenced to prison, Pete Wilson was not CA Governor and the 3 strike laws were not in effect. Therefore, since his old record does not consist of a PC211 he will only be sentenced as a first strike offender. If the DA is savvy and is not a newbie, they would look at adding additional charges, like a felon with an unauthorized firearm, which could add 10 years to whatever sentence he gets for the robbery. He is NOT going to be locked up for good. He could get back on the prowl, flaunting his sexual prowess/mojo and terrorize more women who have low self-esteem. There is no such thing as prison rehabilitation. At least he is able to spend time with his son who is also at the same jail facility and has been there since August 2015. Ironically, Gilbert & his son are being held with $1,000,000. So is his one of many girlfriends Shenita. I wonder was this chick dumb enough to think she was his only woman or girlfriend. He was going around telling people he was getting married. What a poor example of a parent. They say what goes around comes around. I wonder if Gilbert realizes this is just his karma!

  12. I don't know about Gilbert Smith being a snitch but he was released from custody on April 28, 2016. Bailed out by Beverly Thomas allegedly this person posted the bond for a $1,000,000.00 bail. Supposedly the judicial system requires that proof of where the money used for bail come from or how it was obtained. My question is, how does a felon, who used a firearm (allegedly felons cannot have firearms unless they have their rights restored)to commit armed robbery, caught on video camera, clearly identified, get released by the judicial system? Did anyone question where the $100,000 bail bond come from? Or is this a lie and he really did snitch to get out? It did show not eligible for bail on the original booking sheet....This is absolutely unbelievable. Now we are giving some thought to the comment on April 23, 2016 about federal informant.....

  15. Wonder if he will get out on Bail after this one??

  16. I think the Brinks guard should sue the County of Sacramento for the District Attorney and the Judge for allowing him to bond out. I also wonder what will happen with that hundred-thousand-dollar bond that allegedly was put up in order for him to be let out. If he was still locked up none of this would have happened and that for Brinks guard would not be in the hospital trying to recover from a gunshot wound nor would all the people that witnessed that be traumatized. If the judicial folks were smart they would write this up as a Federal offense that way he won't get time served he will have to do the time in a Federal prison. I guess he must have burned through that $200,000 or over that amount from Walmart within a few months. This is a sign of a very desperate and dangerous repeat offender who needs to be locked up forever.
