Suspect Arrested After Assaulting, Attempted Robbery of Two Elk Grove Pedestrians

An Elk Grove man is in custody at the county jail after he an allegedly assaulted one person and attempted robbery on another.

According to Elk Grove Police, Joseph Wayne Whatley, 30, of Elk Grove approached his first victim who was walking near Laguna Main Street and Vaux Avenue in the Laguna West neighborhood and asked a question. After asking the question, Whatley allegedly punched the victim in the stomach in an unprovoked attack.

Whatley then approached another person, attempted to steal their personal property and a struggle ensued. The victim was able to retain their possessions and fled the area on foot.

Responding officers were able to locate Whatley and placed him under arrest. Whatley is being held on a $50,000 bail and will be arraigned on Wednesday, June 13.
