9th Assembly District candidate, Democratic challenger opening campaign office

A challenger to an incumbent California Assemblymember in the March primary will be opening a campaign office this weekend in Sacramento.

Traci Stafford, who is challenging fellow Democrat and Assemblymember Jim Cooper in the March primary, has scheduled an opening ceremony of her campaign office on the morning of February 1. Stafford and Cooper, both Elk Grove residents, are two of the four candidates seeking to advance to the November race.

Stafford's campaign office will be located at 9912 Business Park Drive in Sacramento. After the kick-off event, campaign volunteers will canvas precincts.

Along with Stafford and Cooper, there are two other candidates seeking to advance to the November ballot. Those candidates are Democrat Mushtaq Tahirkheli, and Republican Eric Rigard

Stafford and Cooper are expected to advance to the November general election. Although Cooper and Stafford are both members of the Democratic party, they respectively represent the moderate and progressive wings of the party.

Recently Stafford was endorsed by Courage California, a progressive advocacy group claiming 1.4 million members. In their endorsement, Courage California said Cooper, a retired Sacramento County Sheriff, "consistently skips votes on vital progressive legislation - more than any other Democrat - and favors a draconian approach to criminal justice."

Cooper, who has amassed a dominating campaign financial advantage, has not yet announced the opening of a campaign office.
