Detroit Lions roster review: Will Kenny Wiggins hold onto a starting spot? - Pride Of Detroit

By John Hull |

All NFL clubs cut their pre-season rosters from 80 to 53 players Saturday in preparation for the coming season. And, at this moment, only one Elk Grove-area athlete will be in a pro football uniform this weekend when the NFL kicks off its 2020 season.

UPDATE September 7:

On Sunday, all three Elk Grove-based pro football players cut by their NFL teams Saturday were re-signed by their clubs and will be on the practice squads. Kenny Wiggins, an offensive guard who played his high school football at Elk Grove, signed with the Lions, the team he has played for the previous two seasons.

Lamar Jackson (Franklin) stayed on with the Jets. He is a defensive back. Cole Hikutini, who played locally at Pleasant Grove, will remain with the Cowboys at tight end.

Because of the new coronavirus rules, NFL practice squads were expanded to 16 players, four of whom can have unlimited previous game experience. These players will earn between $8,400 and $12,000 per week. They can sign with another club during the season, but that team must add that player to its 53-man active squad.
