Desmond overtakes Fishman for narrow lead in Sacramento County Supervisors District 3 race

In the closely watched Sacramento County Board of Supervisors District 3 race, Rich Desmond has overtaken Greg Fishman for the lead.

In tallies released this afternoon, Desmond now has a 447 vote lead over Fishman with 50,411 to 49,944. In the previous results released last Friday, Fishman had a 1,373 lead.

Democrat Fishman and Republican Desmond are competing to fill the seat being vacated by Republican Susan Peters. Should Desmond maintain his lead and win, he would be the second Republican on the Board of Supervisors.

Last month Democratic Supervisors Phil Serna and Patrick Kennedy sent a letter to County Executive Nav Gill, urging his resignation after learning he used CARES Act money for Sacramento County Sheriff's Department payroll and not for COVID-19 relief, which was its intended use. Gill's employment contract requires four supervisors to vote for his removal, and Peters and Supervisor Sue Frost have indicated their support of Gill.

Should Desmond prevail, he is expected to join fellow Republican Sue Frost and support the continued employment of Nav Gill, who has become a lightning rod of controversy.

The next voting updates are at 4 p.m. on Friday, November 13.
