Elk Grove man arrested for allegedly stealing lost money rather than returning

An Elk Grove was arrested after he allegedly stole lost cash and refused to return it to its owners.

On Friday, November 13, the victim accidentally dropped a large sum of cash in the parking lot at one of the banks located on the 5100 block of Laguna Boulevard. After the victim realized they dropped the cash they drove back and saw Michael Smith, 56, and approached them.

Instead of turning over the cash, Smith gave a portion and fled in his vehicle. While officers were on the scene, Smith returned and was detained.

A record search revealed Smith was on probation. A search of Smith's vehicle led to the discovery of the remaining cash.
