In an announcement released today, California Assemblymember Jim Cooper (D - Elk Grove) said he has opened a committee to run for Sacramento County Sheriff in 2022. Cooper, who retired as a 30-year Sacramento County Sheriff Captain in 2014, ran for the office in 2010 but lost to current Sheriff Scott Jones.

“After a 30-year career in law enforcement, I’ve been asked by many elected officials and citizens across the county to seek the open Sheriff’s seat in Sacramento County in 2022," Cooper said in his statement. "At this point, I am only weighing my options and considering what is best for my family, the people of the 9th Assembly District, and for the citizens of Sacramento County.

After serving on the Elk Grove City Council for 14 years, Cooper was elected to the California Assembly in 2014 over former Sacramento City Councilmember Darrell Fong. In 2016, 2018, and this year Cooper easily won reelection.

Although Cooper is thought to easily retain the seat, it has long been rumored he was still interested in the sheriff's position. Although Jones has not announced his 2022 intentions, he has become a polarizing law enforcement figure in Sacramento County.

If Cooper ultimately runs for Sheriff and bows out of the Assembly, several elected officials in the currently configured 9th District are expected to vie for the position in the 2022 primary. The top two finishers in that race, regardless of party affiliation, would advance to the November 2022 general election in a newly configured district.
