Unlike other major professional sports, Major League Baseball is driven by statistics, whether it is an ERA of a pitcher or batting averages. Stats are so sacred to MLB they often dictate what and what cannot be done with rules.
There is now a stat that is not related to on-field play, instead focused on the eating ability of fans attending games. Let's call in the FHDS or the Fan Hot Dog per Season stat.
According to a study released this week by National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC), those teams since 2015 that have enjoyed the most success also have fams who have consumed the most sausages and hot dogs per season.
At the top of the hot dog consumption are last year's World Series Champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Between 2015 and last year, Dodger fans by far ate more Dodger Dogs (see chart below) than fans for any MLB team.
The NHDSC notes "The Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals, each of whom average more than one million hot dog and sausages sold per year, are five of the seven teams with the most wins over the five-year period that the data examined."
As for annual consumption in the non-COVID era, the NHDSC estimates about 20 million hot dogs and 4.5 million sausages are wolfed down during a typical MLB season.
"The right players on the field aren't the only ingredient of successful teams," NHDSC President Eric Mittenthal said. "It's clear that well-fed, enthusiastic fans drive winning too and no food makes fans happier at a ballgame than hot dogs and sausages."
As teams improve and attract more fans, hot dogs and sausage consumption at those franchises will naturally increase. All of this begs the question - what comes first - increased hot dog consumption or games won by your favorite team?
Think about that the next time you attend a game of your favorite MLB team!

Nothing like a Dodger dog with mustard and relish while sitting in Chavez Ravine! Anyone who puts ketchup on a Dodger dog should be banned from eating them. . . like my sister! I hope to get down there this year because I want to see how they redesigned the stadium but kept the original feel of it.
So happy the boys of summer are back!
