Second proposed State Senate map for Elk Grove shows different southern configuration

The second series of maps released by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission on Tuesday showed a slightly different geographic orientation for Elk Grove's proposed district.

The current proposed map continues to group all of Elk Grove with the entire city of Stockton. The most significant difference is in the southern portion of the district.

In the first map, the southern portion included Stockton as the western border, extending to the east of the city. The second map eliminates the eastern section, places Stockton on the eastern border, and the district runs west and south to include the city of Manteca. It continues to include Galt, but eliminates Lodi.

Additionally, the northern border of the district extends into urban areas of unincorporated Sacramento County. Communities added included Florin, Vineyard, portions of Little Saigon, and other portions of South Sacramento.

While both configurations have over one million residents, the new configuration will increase Asian representation by four percent and decrease white by six percent. Black and Latino populations in the second map increase by two and one percent, respectively.

Currently, Elk Grove is in the 6th State Senate District and represented by Dr. Richard Pan, who cannot run for reelection under term limits. Should Elk Grove's next senate district remain paired with Stockton, it will have a different flavor as the 6th District is entirely in Sacramento County and includes all of the cities of Sacramento and Elk Grove.

At least one Elk Grove City Council member has expressed interest in running for the office.
