Even though she had closed her city council campaign account earlier in 2021, Elk Grove City Councilmember Stephanie Nguyen started a new one and ended the year with a flourish of activity.
According to her California Form 460 filed today with the Elk Grove City Clerk, Nguyen raised $31,988 for the six months ending December 31. She entered the new year with $31,373 on hand.
Although Nguyen received the contributions to her city council account, they can be transferred if, as expected, she announces a run for the 10th District of the California Assembly. Nguyen is reportedly awaiting Assemblymember Jim Cooper's Sacramento County Sheriff's candidacy announcement before she formally enters the race.
Among the significant contributions Nguyen received was from current 10th District Assemblymember Kevin McCarty. With redistricting, Elk Grove has moved from the 9th District to the 10th, and McCarty has said he will seek reelection in the 8th District, which covers north Sacramento.
McCarty's contribution to Nguyen, a moderate Democrat, is significant as he has staked out more progressive positions. Also, it signals his support of Nguyen over the other major declared candidate, Sacramento City Councilmember Eric Guerra.
Along with several individual donations, Nguyen received support from the following entities:
- AT&T Employees PAC - $1,000
- California Real Estate PAC - $4,900
- Evan Low For Assembly - $4,900
- Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 477 - $4,900
Notwithstanding her year-end flourish, should Nguyen run against Guerra and the other declared Democratic candidate Dr. Tecoy Porter, she is substantially behind in fundraising with only four months to the June primary. Guerra starts the new year with $325,000, while Porter has $27,399 on hand.
Guerra and Porter originally were candidates for the 8th California Senate District but switched races with the entry of former California Insurance Commissioner and Assemblymember Dave Jones.
