Punjabi community organizing effort for Elk Grove City Council redistricting hearing

A community of interest has organized an effort to express their desires at tomorrow night's meeting of the Elk Grove city council on decennial redistricting of the city's four city council districts.

According to information posted on social media today, during the 7 p.m hearing tomorrow night, members of the Punjabi community are being urged to express support for a map that they say will keep their community united. Without specific recommendations, the Twitter message is urging supporters to seek changes to Map 12.
The message is being conveyed on behalf of the Jakara Movement. On the Jakara Twitter page, they say their movement is "Building a new generation of Sikh leadership through individual development, community organizing, and youth power."

Map 12 (see above) is one of three maps being considered for new district boundaries. During the March 9 redistricting meeting, two public speakers urged the Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen and the city council to consider another map that would have united the city's Punjabi community.

That map was not one of the three finalists placed into consideration.
