Two of the four candidates in the District 5 Sacramento County Board of Supervisors race were recent beneficiaries of independent committees. The committees also reflect the partisan nature of the non-partisan race featuring Republican Pat Hume and Democrat Jaclyn Moreno.
A mailer received last weekend by Republican voters came from the conservative-leaning Northstate Building Industry Association, which promotes housing development. For almost 16 years, Hume has maintained close relationships with real estate developers and similar associations as an Elk Grove City Councilmember.
The Northstate BIA features typical Republican talking points such as public safety, small business support, and one of the hot issues this election cycle, homelessness. The mailer claims, "Pat Hume has kept neighborhoods safe with new incentives to clean up homeless encampments, giving Elk Grove the lowest homelessness rate in Sacramento County."
Also received last weekend by Democratic voters was a mailer from the Working Families for Jaclyn Moreno for Sacramento County Supervisors 2022. While the mailer notes Moreno, a Director for the Cosumnes Community Services District, is a small business owner, it includes issues appealing to Democratic voters, such as government accountability, ensuring equity, and addressing homelessness.
Regarding homelessness, the mailer notes Moreno has worked in mental health for 20 years and "has the right experience to address Sacramento's homeless crisis, understanding the way county programs work and providing the services needed to end the cycle of homelessness for good."
The other two candidates in the race are former Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly and Alex Joe. If no candidate receives over 50-percent of the vote in the June 7 primary, the top two finishers will advance to the November general election.
Separately, the California Real Estate Association has sent a mailer attacking Ly. Though the mailer does not support anyone specific, it appears they seek to weaken Ly's candidacy for the benefit of an unnamed candidate.
We are attempting to obtain a clear copy of the mailer attacking Ly.
