Hume walloped with negative online ad featuring reported DUI arrests, racist quote

In an online political advertisement that appeared today, District 5 Sacramento County Supervisor candidate and Elk Grove City Councilmember Pat Hume was walloped.

The title of the grainy black and white piece with red highlights, "Pat Hume is not the solution," contains an unflattering list of events in Hume's life, including a DUI arrest. Elk Grove News received an email copy of the piece today, and several readers said they saw it as an advertisement on social media and online pages.

The piece also contained a quote attributed to Hume saying, "two Hmongs don't make it right." One of Hume's opponents in the District 5 Sacramento County Board of Supervisors race is former Elk Grove Mayor Steve Ly, who is of Hmong ancestry.

During the six years Hume and Ly served on the Elk Grove City Council, their fractured relationship was frequently on display during meetings (see video below). Although the Hume quote on Hmongs was not contextualized, it has been suggested he made it during a closed city council session.

During Ly's unsuccessful mayoral reelection campaign in 2020, as he was facing accusations of political harassment, many supporters said his mayoral opponent Bobbie Singh-Allen made disparaging remarks about the Hmong culture in an Elk Grove Citizen story. During several 2020 teleconferenced city council meetings, many people called during public comment to say the Hmong community had been targeted with racist comments.

Recently Ly was targeted with two negative mailers sponsored by the California Association of Realtors. Ly did not immediately respond to a request to verify his campaign produced the ad, but several readers said the online ads were attributed to his campaign.

If none of the four District 5 candidates exceeds the 50-percent threshold during the June 7 primary, the top two finishers will advance to the November general election.
