Two high-profile races for Elk Grove voters during the 2022 election cycle are the open seats in California Assembly District 10 and State Senate District 8. All four contenders in those races are Democrats, so today's endorsement announcement by U.S. Senator Alex Padilla is significant.
Today Padilla announced his endorsement of Sacramento City Councilmember Eric Guerra for the 10th District Assembly seat and former California Assemblymember and Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones for the 8th District Senate seat. Guerra faces Elk Grove City Councilmember Stephanie Nguyen, and Jones is running against Sacramento City Councilmember Angelique Ashby.
In an email, Guerra said he was honored to be endorsed by the first-term senator who was appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom to the vacancy created when Kamela Harris was elected Vice president and noted their similarities.
"Like me, Senator Padilla is a proud son of immigrant parents who came to the United States from Mexico in pursuit of the American Dream. Guerra said. "From local office to the Legislature, to protecting our voting rights as the California Secretary of State, to now serving as our Senator, Alex has always fought for those most in need and continues to fight for our communities — I am honored to have him in my corner."
In endorsing Jones, Padilla said, "Throughout his 20-year public service career, Dave has championed affordable housing, raising the minimum wage, and expanding preschool for more families. Dave is ready to hit the ground running in the State Senate."
Although all four candidates for the Assembly and Senate seats are Democrats, Ashby and Nguyen are considered more moderate than Jones and Guerra. Jones and Guerra have generally attracted more labor support, while Ashby and Nguyen have gained business and law enforcement endorsements.
