With the countdown to the March 31 deadline, many Elk Grove city employees and all current city council members have filed their annual statements of economic interest. The so-called California Form 700 must be filed by elected officials and several classifications of employees.

For the second year running, the king of the freebie on the Elk Grove City Council is District 2 representative Darren Suen. His disclosure reveals he has accepted eight gifts, mostly meals, valued at $1,275 in 2022.

Suen accepted the following gifts:
  • Asian American Business Club, November 18 dinner - $150
  • Hefner Law, April 30 dinner - $250
  • Ca Asian Chamber of Commerce, May 13 night market - $250
  • Pappas Investments, June 5 Bounty on the Boulevard - $300
  • Downey Brand, May 1 brunch - $50
  • Sutter, May 5 reception - $50
  • Tiechert, May 5 reception - $50
  • Sheet Metal Workers Local #104, October 7 golf tourney - $175
Suen also reported stock investments valued between $42,000 and $410,000 and a family income exceeding $200,000, which is more than double the city's median family income.

Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen and Vice Mayor Kevin Spease did not report the acceptance of any gifts during 2022. Councilmember Rod Brewer and Sergio did not have to report economic interests for 2022.

These disclosures should be viewed in a contrarian manner. Could Mayor Singh-Allen and Vice Mayor Spease simply are not reporting what they received?

Who would know other than the donors? It would not be the first time a politician does not disclose gifts.
