During the April 26, 2023, Elk Grove City Council meeting, Vice Mayor Kevin Spease reminisced about growing up in the city's rural Sheldon area. Spease said he understood the residents' concerns but noted that a project with two-acre parcels still offers a rural lifestyle.
Spease's comments were made regarding the proposed Pleasant Grove Estates project, which seeks to build 14 homes on 31 acres in the Sheldon area of Elk Grove. Although District 2 City Councilmember Rod Brewer supports Sheldon area residents' opposition to the project, along with Spease, Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen and District 1 City Councilmember Darren Suen have signaled support for the new housing development.
The project is tentatively scheduled to be heard at the May 24 Elk Grove City Council meeting and appears headed toward approval. Read about the April 26 hearing here.

Good for you, Kevin Spease! Your roots are in the rural area, so you do understand. And never apologize for giving your constituents a little history.
Every time I think of the chance of losing the rural area, our little two acres of paradise, I think of other areas of Elk Grove, what has occurred, and always think of Joni Mitchell’s lyrics:
“Don't it always seem to go,
That you don't know what you got 'til it's gone?
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.”
Shame on you, Darren Suen! This city was created by rural homeowners, ranchers and farmers. It is our history. Your predecessors thought so much of our history that they even set aside a small potion of the city limits and officially named it the "rural area" and established it's defined boundaries. Now you're willing to toss this history aside for more homes? So disappointing. So many people worked so hard to fight to maintain our history and you're willing to destroy it for a few more roof tops? Future generations won't know about our history because you and you fellow council members are considering taking an active hand in destroying it. The land owner who bought this tract of land knew what he was buying and the restrictions that came with it when he bought it. Ever heard the phrase caveat emptor?
You seem to be willing to benefit one land owner the the detriment of all the other land owners in the area as well as the citizens outside the boundaries that love this area. That just doesn't make sense. You're the deciding vote here. I know you're smart enough to do what's right if you can just find the courage to stand up to the mayor. Well, can ya?
