Hmong Americans honored by the Elk Grove Unified School District

Trustees issue proclamation for Hmong-American Day

During their Tuesday, May 2 meeting, Elk Grove Unified School District Trustees approved a proclamation honoring Hmong Americans.

The proclamation recognizes May 14 as Hmong-American day in the Elk Grove Unified School District. The proclamation was unanimously approved.

Speaking during the discussion on the proclamation was Trustee Sean Yang. As a person of Hmong descent, Yang thanked his colleagues for honoring and recognizing the community.

The honor for the Hmong community from the school district stands in contrast to a proclamation being sought to honor Hmong American Day from the City of Elk Grove. In an opinion piece published yesterday, Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen was criticized for not recognizing and supporting the Hmong community with a proclamation and actions in her past.

The proceedings from yesterday’s EGUSD Trustee meeting and Yang’s comments can be seen in the video.
