California Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen (D - Elk Grove) had her first piece of legislation signed into law today. The legislation was signed by California Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins who is acting governor while Gov. Gavin Newsom is out of state.

“I thank Acting-Governor Atkins for signing AB 354 into law and for recognizing Elk Grove’s need for additional representation on the SacRT Board,” Nguyen said. “AB 354 will ensure that the people of Elk Grove, Sacramento County’s second largest city have a stronger voice in transit matters that affect their day-to-day lives.”

Atkins, who is the first person in 150 years to have served as both Senate President pro Tempore and Assembly Speaker, today became the first Senate President pro Tempore in California history to sign legislation into law as Acting Governor.

Assembly Bill 354 will expand Elk Grove’s representation on the Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) Board of Directors to two seats. Elk Grove is currently represented on the board by Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen.

“The Governor’s signature today on AB 354 will add another member to the SacRT Board from the City of Elk Grove that will more accurately reflect demographic representation and equity following recent annexation agreements,” SacRT GM/CEO Henry Li said. “I would like to thank Assemblymember Nguyen for championing this legislative change that will ensure all voices have representation on SacRT’s Board.”

The current SacRT Board consists of three members of the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, four members from the Sacramento City Council, two from Elk Grove and one member each from the city councils of Citrus Heights, Folsom, and Rancho Cordova.
