While the pledge is symbolic in nature, I'm not sure older adults who recite it are actually listening to the words any more. I recall, as a kid, I did listen to the words as I recited them every morning at school. I have no problem with your proposed revision, in fact in these days of civil discourse, divisiveness and even hatred, it seems totally appropriate. That said, I'm not sure that public schools today even recite the pledge anymore. If not, it's just another example of our failing democracy.
