After delays, land has been acquired for a long-awaited westside Elk Grove Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) commuter rail station.
With the extension of the ACE network, which is operated by the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission (SJRRC), Elk Grove will now be part of a network that extends to San Jose. The expansion of the commuter network will include stops in Elk Grove and downtown Sacramento.
Although today's announcement did not specify what land was acquired, the parcel designated for the parking lot and station is a recreational vehicle storage lot on Dwight Road. Delays have plagued the project.
In December, SJRRC's Deputy Director of Passenger Experience and Communications David Lipari told Elk Grove News higher construction costs were the primary cause of the delays. He also cited coordination efforts with Union Pacific, utilities, and unspecified stakeholders, saying they created "bottlenecks" to progress.
At that time, Lipari also said the Elk Grove station's final design would be completed a year from then. Construction is scheduled for completion by the start of 2027.
"For a program that spans 16 stations and several miles of trackwork, the level of coordination work becomes a bottleneck for a select few reviewers at these entities," Lipari said. "Additionally, construction cost escalation has produced schedule delays."
Lipari did not quote the current costs or the sources of additional funds to address shortages, but it was reported in 2021 that $1.3 billion of the funding came from state and federal sources. More information about the new Elk Grove stop is available here.
