Voices of Elk Grove - School district critic expresses disappointment with Mayor Singh-Allen, city council

A frequent critic of the Elk Grove Unified School District spoke during the March 13 Elk Grove City Council meeting and criticized them, saying they are uninterested in protecting children.

Speaking during public comment on non-agenda items, Mr. Kirk Thompson discussed a recent incident at an Elk Grove elementary school where a teacher started a U B U, or rainbow club for grade school students. The reported incident incited anger among many parents who said it was denying them their parental rights.

Thompson has spoken several times to the city council and has, among other things, implored Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen to use her influence on Elk Grove Unified School Trustees to remove books he and others called pornographic from school libraries. Defenders of the books questioned by Thompson and others say the targeted books affirm inclusiveness for LGBTQ+ students.

Before she was elected mayor in 2020, Ms. Singh-Allen served as a trustee with the EGUSD for eight years and more recently appointed the spouse of a current trustee to an Elk Grove city commission.

Mr. Thompson's entire commentary can be seen in the video.

Setting aside the comments from Thompson, is it just me or did the absence of Spease and the city manager seem a little odd? It is as though they purposely scheduled a light meeting so those two could be off to where, a spring break vacation perhaps? What happened to the importance of conducting the people's business. I wonder how packed the next agenda will be.
