EPA grants to send electric school replacement buses to Elk Grove Unified School District


The Elk Grove Unified School District will be adding electric school buses to its fleet thanks to a federal grant for California school districts. 

On Wednesday the the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) announced recipients of the 2023 Clean School Bus Program rebate competition. The rebates, totaling $91,230,000 for California, will help selectees purchase 380 clean school buses in 47 school districts across the state. 

Elk Grove will receive $5.5 million in rebate funding to purchase 16 buses. 

According the EPA announcement, "This program is a crucial step in California’s journey towards improving children’s health and tackling harmful air pollution, replacing older, diesel-fueled school buses linked to student and community health issues."

“EPA is proud to take another step in advancing the rollout of electric school buses in California, helping create a future where our children can breathe cleaner air,” EPA’s Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator Martha Guzman said.

Other Sacramento area school districts receiving the grants include $2.4 million for the Sacramento Unified School District, $660,000 for Galt Joint Union Elementary, $440,000 for Galt Joint Union High, and $440,000 for Roseville City Elementary. 

The funding is part of President Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The EPA Clean School Bus Program received an unprecedented $5 billion in funding to help transition the nation’s school bus fleet.

Doris Matsui (CA 7). "I was proud to vote for the Clean School Bus Program in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and today, I am proud to see four school districts in California’s 7th District receive funding to replace 29 old buses with new zero-emission buses."
