E Bike voucher program to be considered by Elk Grove City Council

Electric bikes like this could soon become a common site on Elk Grove streets. |

When the Elk Grove City Council meets this Wednesday, one of the items included on their agenda will be an electric bike library program that could lead to a voucher program.

According to the staff report issued on Friday, the pilot program would allow participants older than 18 to check out an electric bike or scooter from a city library for a three-week trial. The program is scheduled to start in August and was funded by a $250,000 grant from the Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG).

The city will collect data on device usage to determine whether the program should continue. In addition, the city could establish a federally funded program providing vouchers for the purchase of electric mobility devices.

The program is part of a national effort by the U.S. Department of Energy to reduce vehicle miles driven and emissions.  The city council meeting starts at 6 p.m.
