Rep. Doris Matsui says Biden chose 'unity' with his withdrawal, but silent on who should be the replacement

Today's unexpected but unsurprising announcement by President Joe Biden that he will withdraw from the race has generated widespread commentary. Among those commenting on the event is Democratic Congresswoman Doris Matsui.

"By choosing to step aside as the Democratic nominee, he has, again, chosen unity. We all owe President Biden a debt of gratitude," Matsui said in a statement this afternoon.

Since his dismal debate performance against Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump three weeks ago, Biden has been under constant pressure to withdraw before the August Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Not long after Biden issued his statement, he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the party's nominee.

Several high-level Democratic Congress members and Senators have recently pressed Biden. Leading up to today's announcement, Matsui has not publicly commented on the perilous position Biden found himself in.

Matsui's admiration for Biden was evident in her words of praise, "He reminded us that the American story is one of progress, possibilities, and resilience."

With Biden's withdrawal, the question of whether Harris should be given an automatic path to the Democratic presidential nomination has been raised. Matsui, however, has not disclosed her preferred candidate for the Democratic ticket.
