During the regular board meeting on August 6, Sacramento County Supervisor Pat Hume said he was at 'wit's end' over unlicensed food vendors.
Hume said his office has received numerous calls complaining about illegal food vendors, who he described as scofflaws who can avoid health inspections. Supervisor Rich Desmond joined Hume in expressing concern.
Hume said he has received numerous complaints throughout District 5 about vendors operating outside the scope of the Sacramento County Environmental Management Department (EMD) regulations. Among its many functions, the EMD conducts health and safety inspections of restaurants and food trucks.
"I think that it is patently unfair and inequitable that we have brick and mortar establishments, we have non-profits that want to set up a booth at a community event, and they are held to a certain standard," he said. "And yet we these scofflaws that know if they set up after five pm, they know county health has gone home for the day, and they're not going to get inspected and be held to any standards."
Desmond echoed Hume's concerns, saying, "We need to have a better way to endure, first and foremost, the health and safety of the people who patronize these restaurants."
County Executive David Villanueva acknowledged their concerns and said the matter would be investigated and brought back to the board. Hume and Desmond's remarks can be seen in the video.
