In about two weeks, the city of Elk Grove will open its first permanent year-round homeless shelter. In an ongoing effort to ease public anxiety about the services and the clients that will be served at the facility, the city will hold an open house next week.

The new facility is located at the Calvary Christian Center, 9499 East Stockton Boulevard. The city has leased the church's underutilized facility and has contracted operations with the Roseville, Calif.-based The Gathering Inn for three years.

The open house will be on Tuesday, October 29, between 4 and 7 p.m. The city's announcement says participants can speak with the management team that will operate the facility, which will serve 35 clients.

The opening represents a significant service advancement for Elk Grove's unhoused residents. Unlike the facility that operated in Old Town-Historic Downtown Elk Grove between November 2023 and April 2024, this faculty will be year-round and acknowledges the permanence of Elk Grove's unhoused residents.

When the city opened the Old Town facility last year, and this year, several people opposed it. This year, residents near East Stockton Boulevard criticized the city for not seeking public input before selecting the site (see video below).

The homeless shelter's funding is made possible in part by the Measure E sales tax increase approved by Elk Grove voters in 2022.
