Vote No on California's Proposition 36 releases commercial, calls it 'an illusion, not a solution'

One of the more contentious issues on this year's California statewide ballot is Proposition 36. With primary backing from Republicans, a few Democrats, and the law enforcement community, the measure would roll back the social justice reforms of 2014 California voter-approved Proposition 47.

Even though polls show a majority of likely California voters support the measure, in recent days, a counter-campaign has surfaced. This campaign, funded by two billionaires, argues that Prop 36 "is an illusion, not a solution" to addressing drug addiction and shoplifting.

In Elk Grove, Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen, a spokesperson for Yes on 36, has instructed city council colleagues Rod Brewer, Sergio Robles, and Darren Suen to support the measure. The city has also officially endorsed the proposition.

As of September 21, the Committee to Protect Public Safety, the group opposing 36, had received $1.7 million in funding. Since then, an additional $2.9 million, including six large donations plus several smaller contributions, has flowed into the committee (see PDF document below).
