Michael Hargis made this promise to Elk Grove taxpayers. |

The news of the "temporary" closure of Elk Grove's overhyped Slow and Low was unsurprising. The Old Town Elk Grove restaurant, with a $500,000 Elk Grove taxpayer loan guarantee, will close for retooling effective January 1 with an uncertain future after that.

It is noteworthy that 18 months ago to the day, Slow and Low's Michael Hargis appeared before the Elk Grove City Council. Mr. Hargis assured a smiling Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen, economic development director Darrell Doan, and city manager Jason Berhmann that he was good for the loan guarantee and would not default.

"I'm not going to let that happen, I'm not going to let it go into default," he told them and Singh-Allen's city councilmen. He added, "It's going to be incredible."

While Slow and Low has not defaulted, it is never a good sign when a restaurant closes for retooling after being open for seven months.

See the image below for an email from the city of Elk Grove praising Slow and Low when it opened last summer.

Hargis said what he needed to say to fleece the city out of half a million dollars for his restaurant. Can't really blame him. If someone was willing to give you that kind of money, what would you be willing to do? Make a promise?
The CC is a bunch of rubes. This was a bad business decision from the outset. Hargis had two other restaurants that were struggling before the surety was approved, didn't the city do their homework? The mayor and her minions are quick to frivolously spend taxpayer $$, but they don't spend their own personal $$ on these "investments." They are not and have never been prudent stewards of the taxpayers $$.
