Elk Grove News Minute - For years to come, racism and hate will flourish in Elk Grove and beyond

No elected official knows Elk Grove better than Sacramento County Supervisor Pat Hume. Before his current position, Mr. Hume was on the Elk Grove City Council for 16 years, making him the longest-serving council member.

Commenting on a racist event in the city about 8 years ago, Hume, a longtime Elk Grove resident, noted the city's redneck heritage.

This editorial appears to stylistically use the shotgun approach in addressing racism and the 'redneck heritage' of Elk Grove. In typecasting Elk Grove racism, the commentary sprays buckshot all over the place--from the 'redneck heritage' of the City's early days, to blaming the Mayor for standing in opposition to a supportive housing project in Old Town, to the reelection of Donald Trump as President. Whew! Now I'm waiting for Doc Holliday to jump out from behind a wall at Dust Bowl Brewery!

The commentary implies that the Mayor supported white-heritage racism because she sided with white-dominated Old Town in denying a supportive housing project for the homeless. No, the residents and business owners of Old Town were looking out for their property values and business vitality and stereotyped homeless as a financial threat--it had nothing to do with race. The City leaders also shared their concerns because the City is the leading investor in Old Town real estate.

Then we get to Donald Trump. Trump only received a pittance of votes from Democrat-majority Elk Grove, but to now suggest that white racism in Elk Grove will thrive under Trump is so...racist? And let's talk about this whole white heritage thing--the ethnic breakdown in Elk Grove is currently 31.5% white and declining, and 30.1% Asian and increasing. Where's this white heritage I keep reading about?

The topic for this week's commentary was probably driven by the recent vandalism of the electronic reader board at Franklin Blvd. which was manipulated to read a derogatory slur for Blacks. But to suggest that the Mayor, Donald Trump (and his supporters), and the 'white heritage' of Elk Grove will continue to foster further racism in Elk Grove is just plain racist itself.
