Elk Grove News Minute - What’s more important, the discretionary Sacramento Zoo vanity project or homo sapiens?

During their Wednesday, January 22 meeting, the Elk Grove City Council and the public saw new renderings of the unfunded $300 million Sacramento Zoo relocation project. As they regularly do, the city posted the images on social media to create buzz and people appear supportive.

Good point here; aren't the needs of the citizens more important than the creation of a zoo? That $300M could work wonders for this city and its "taxpaying homo sapiens." No homeless, new businesses, better roads, less flooding of neighborhoods, more police with less response time, an overpass over the UPRR tracks so that police and other emergency vehicles aren't critically stopped when lives hang in the balance. That $300M could do a lot of good for us. Isn't that a better use of all of this money?
Major cities across the country have saddled their taxpayers with subsidized sports stadiums that were promoted as money makers for the region, but alas, turned out to be duds. Even Santa Clara landed the big whale Niners and their taxpayers are still waiting for the economic return. Oakland got financially smart with taxpayer's money and essentially sent the Raiders and Athletics packing.
But Elk Grove's leaders are sold on this zoo dream that will somehow achieve what has eluded other major cities across the country. These subsidized entertainment venues are financial losers for the taxpayers, but give Elk Grove leadership credit for one thing--they are masters of deceit.
Take for example, the City Manager stating that $50 million of cold hard cash (not merely pledges) must be on deposit with the City before construction commences. In a twisted way he is being truthful, but what he is not admitting is that a prior staff report noted that the city could accept any shortfall by adding the deficit amount into the bond float for the zoo.
So when the bond is issued, cash is provided and presto, the City Manager can tout that we have our $50 million on deposit! This is so Michael Milken-esh, and who do you think is backstopping the bond if the zoo fails to pay their portion of the bond?
For all intents and purposes, this is Elk Grove's stadium deal and it's almost kickoff time. Welcome to the Hall of Shame!
Buidling on the first two comments regarding financial risk, the keyword in the title of this segment was vanity.
Mr. Suen's adamant comments about the naming personify this aspect. Mayor SIngh-Allen and her minions proclaim this project is about the animlas, but is about their collective egos and poltical ambitions.
As Mr. Suen implied during the city council meeting, they want this to be built so their names can live on in perpetuity.

If they want their name in perpetuity, wait for their tombstones.
Vicious, as usual, goes right to the heart of the matter. Like the way this guy thinks. He should be on the dais.
