This week, the California State Assembly was roiled by a heated and, some say, partisan debate on legislation sponsored by freshman Assemblymember Maggie Krell (D - Sacramento).
Krell's Assembly Bill 379 seeks to change legislation previously signed into law regarding child sex trafficking. Krell's version of AB379 would have enhanced the solicitation of 16 and 17-year-old sex trafficking victims from a misdemeanor to an automatic felony with substantial fines and sentencing.
However, Krell's legislation was amended. See below.
During yesterday's session, Elk Grove's Assembly representative, Stephanie Nguyen, made an impassioned floor speech and posted comments on social media. Nguyen's social media comments addressed what she characterized as Republican misinformation about the bill and the amendment.
Nguyen has been viewed as a moderate Democrat who supports law enforcement and took exception to Republican commentary implying her being weak on crime and sex trafficking. Here is Nguyen's social media commentary.

After several other floor speeches, the Assembly voted mostly along party lines to amend the legislation. Three Assembly Democrats, Krell, Joaquin Arambula (Fresno), and Jasmeet Singh (Bakersfield) joined Republicans to oppose the amendment.
Krell's name was stripped from the legislation and replaced with Public Safety Committee Chair Nick Schultz (D - Burbank) and Nguyen, who also serves on that committee. The bill will now be sent to the Assembly Appropriations Committee for further deliberation.

That girl is fired up! Love the commitment to the bill and the betterment of our community and protection of our kids. Never saw anything like that at city hall when she was there. She’s engaged our community in many ways and my hat’s off to her. Keep it up, Steph!!
