Site preparation appears to be underway for the Coral Blossom supportive housing project on Elk Grove-Florin Road in Elk Grove. | |
This morning, work crews were seen working on the Coral Blossom affordable supportive housing project site (see video below). That project is located on Elk Grove's northern border at 8484 Elk Grove-Florin Road, just south of Calvine Road.
A crew of about a dozen workers and a drill rig, cement truck, and other vehicles were seen just before 9 a.m. today. The project developers, Long Beach, Calif.-based Excelerate Housing Group, said they were unaware of any scheduled activity.
Elk Grove city representatives said the work being performed today was for water well removal.
When asked when construction of the 81-unit supportive housing facility is expected to begin, the EHG representative said no date had been established. However, they anticipate an announcement of the start date later this year.
The project was approved last year after being moved by the Elk Grove mayor and city council from an Old Town Elk Grove site. The city council rejected the Old Town Elk Grove site in 2022 after being pressured by Old Town activists, and as a result, the city was sued and lost a fair housing lawsuit brought by Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta.
As a result of the lawsuit, the city agreed to pay about $10 million to settle the matter. The city then gave the five-acre site to EHG, much to the consternation of nearby residents.
