Sacramento Democratic Congressional reps Bera & Matsui condemn Trump's National Guard deployment, Republican Kiley heaps praise
Responding to President Donald Trump's deployment of the California National Guard to Los Angeles protest over ICE raids, Sacramento area Democratic congressional representatives condemned the move.
In statements issues last night, U.S. Representatives Ami Bera and Doris Matsui characterized the deployment as an escalation.
“President Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles without Governor Newsom’s consent is a dangerous escalation," Congressman Bera said. “Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass have made it clear: there is no unmet need. This is not about restoring order. It is about the Administration seeking to inflame tensions and provoke violence from protesters to justify further crackdowns."
In her statement, Congresswoman Matsui said, "President Trump’s deployment of the California National Guard is clearly meant to escalate the situation and deepen his culture of fear. Time and again, the Trump Administration has undermined the rule of law to extend unilateral power. That’s exactly what this is – a power grab to intimidate our immigrant communities and silence dissent."
Both representatives emphasized the right of peaceful protests with Bera urging restraint by protesters and law enforcement.
“I urge protesters to remain peaceful and law enforcement to exercise restraint. Bera said. "The right to peacefully protest is fundamental, and it must be protected.”
Sacramento's other representative Congressman Kevin Kiley praised the president's deployment while criticizing Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
"The acts of violence, lawlessness, and obstruction we are seeing in Los Angeles pose an ongoing risk to public safety," Kiley said. "The President has chosen to protect federal officers and LA citizens because Governor Newsom has refused to do so. I am praying for everyone's safety during this time."
Not surprisingly, other Republicans, such as U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin, support Trump's action. The Oklahoman suggested that Newsom and Bass were not addressing public safety.
"I don't know why a Governor would want to try to protect illegal activity inside a state. And the President has made it very clear, if the Governor or the Mayor of a city isn't willing to protect the citizens of his state or the city, then the President will,” Mullin said on CNN's State of the Union.
Bera and Matsui statement were in line with the California Democratic congressional and senatorial delegation who uniformly condemned Trump's actions. Today, Gov. Newsom is expected to file a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against Trump's actions.
