As online traffic complaints continue unabated, City of Elk Grove joins Reddit to thwart criticism

Like most municipalities and other government entities, Elk Grove, Calif., maintains a social media presence. Most of their activity has been centered on mainstream sites like Facebook, YouTube, X, and Nextdoor.

Recently, the city joined another social media site, Reddit. Unlike the city's activity on the other sites, Elk Grove does not appear to be posting stand-alone announcements on Reddit.

Instead, it is on the site that responds to a growing chorus of criticism against the city and elected officials. Most of the criticism is on Elk Grove's rapidly growing traffic congestion.

The city established its account about two months ago. In the last few days, the city's public information office has responded to complaints about traffic.

Reddit operates differently from other sites where users post information. While the categories, called Subreddits, are moderated by independent individuals, the platform has a freewheeling aura, where topics and images banned by sites like Facebook or YouTube are welcome.

As Elk Grove City Hall grapples with credibility issues, not the least of which is its inability (and some argue, its willingness to increase vehicle traffic to attract sales tax revenue) to address traffic, expect to see the city make more media appearances on TV infotainment programs to control the narrative. Given the freewheeling nature of Reddit, Elk Grove officials may get more than they anticipate on the Elk Grove Subreddit.
