An infotainment interview with Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen and City Manager
Jason Behrmann revealed yet another claim lacking credibility. |

On Wednesday, August 6, Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen and City Manager Jason Behrmann participated in an infotainment interview with Sacramento's Channel 10. Many promises and claims were made during the interview, one of which was the opening of the rail station on the city's west side.

The long-awaited Sacramento extension of Valley Rail, a rail commuter project that will connect Elk Grove to Stockton and Silicon Valley. The Elk Grove station will be on Dwight Road and Laguna Boulevard.

During the interview, City Manager Jason Behmann painted a rosy picture. Here is what Behrmann said during the session about the rail station:

"So design is about 90 percent complete, so they expect to have the design done this spring 26, and put out to bid next summer, and potentially be under construction in late '26, and if all goes well, then by finished by the end of '28."

Aside from purchasing the property for the rail station, Elk Grove does not influence the project's progress. However, as a stakeholder, it is undoubtedly kept informed about the project's progress.

Given that City Manager Behrmann has access to up-to-date information, his estimations should have some validity. Maybe not so.

Having heard Behrmann's schedule (see video below), we were taken aback when reading Sacramento County Supervisor Pat Hume's August 7 monthly email newsletter. While much of Hume's newsletter centered on Sacramento County's homelessness krafuffle with Senator Angelique Ashby, he included a nugget on the rail station.

Hume wrote, "I'm frustrated to report, however, that discussions with Union Pacific to expand Valley rail are becoming more and more complex and funding more and more elusive. That's a discussion for another day, but it's one more plate yours truly is keeping spinning."

We appreciate Supervisor Hume's update and, more importantly, his honesty. Instead of creating a false narrative like the U.S. Army did during the Vietnam War, Mr. Hume delivered an unvarnished review of what is happening.

Additionally, Supervisor Hume acknowledged another political reality: the need for funding. He noted that "funding [is] more and more elusive." Reality is a topic that Elk Grove elected officials avoid at all costs.

Mr. Behrmann was not lying per pe. But he was not being honest either.

He could have factually noted that the project completion date is unknown because of ongoing negotiations with Union Pacific. Instead, Behrmann distorted reality.

It's no wonder claims from Elk Grove City Hall lack credibility with the public.
