Guilty Plea by White Nationalist Exposes Cracks in Elk Grove's Carefully Crafted Image

On a non-stop basis, Elk Grove elected and public officials brand the city as a welcoming community, at least if you have enough money for rent or mortgage payments. Whether it is Mayor Bobbie Singh Allen's non-stop social media posts or the slick press releases churned out by City Hall, the message remains consistent - Elk Grove is a place where everyone is open-minded and open to diversity.

But behind the self-congratulatory hot air lies a far more sobering truth - one that City Hall is unlikely to promote on social media. The recent guilty plea of  Dallas Humber, a 35-year-old Elk Grove resident, exposes a gap between the city's image and the reality on the ground.

Humber wasn't a fringe agitator spouting hate online. She was the leader of the Terrorgram Collective, a white supremacist transnational terrorist organization responsible for inspiring and directing violent attacks around the world.

Under her leadership from July 2022 until her arrest in September 2024, the group committed hate crimes, planned assassinations of U.S. government officials, and conspired to target critical infrastructure. The Department of Justice says her influence extended far beyond the quiet suburban streets she called home.

The attacks she inspired were not abstract threats. They were real, and included the killing of two people at an LGBT bar in Slovakia, the murders of four at Brazilian schools, and the stabbing of five outside a Turkish mosque.

In the United States, followers of Humber plotted to bomb energy facilities in New Jersey and Tennessee and sought to assassinate both American and Australian officials.

These verified activities were not from a distant extremist network operating in shadowy corners of the globe - they were coordinated in part from right here in Elk Grove. The same Elk Grove that boasts of being a place of milk and honey.

The mayor and city council will undoubtedly avoid any mention of Humber's. But this episode should prompt a deeper reckoning.

What conditions allow violent extremists to operate quietly in our neighborhoods? Does groupthink so permeate City Hall that any thought this was possible in Elk Grove was thought to be improbable?

City Hall dedicates a boatload of cash to promoting unity and diversity, but branding is not always a reflection of reality. An honest city government with true leadership is not defined by its slogans but by its willingness to confront uncomfortable truths regardless of the consequences.

Humber will be sentenced in December, and the plea could result in a prison term of 25 to 30 years. Whether she spends the rest of her life behind bars or eventually walks free, her case will remain a stark reminder that hate can thrive anywhere.

And given her unapologetic white nationalist ideology, it's hard to shake one thought - could President Trump, who happily pardoned January 6 insurrectionists, not only free but also celebrate Humber? President Trump, after all, has never been shy about courting the far-right fringe.

It is within the realm of possibility that Ms. Humber could be back in Elk Grove post haste.

Isn't it ironic that Mayor Singh-Allen and the city council kowtowed to a bunch of Old Town rednecks and blocked the Oak House project, but turn around and claim this city is welcoming to all! Welcome to all, especially is you got Bay Area cash money to buy one the McMansions. So much hot air from city hall.

And yet the Council Chambers where all their political theatrics take place, remain empty.
