Mailers for November redistricting elections start arriving; Prepare for a media deluge

With the ink barely dry from Gov. Gavin Newsom's signature on legislation passed today in Sacramento, political mailers for the November redistricting special election have started arriving in voters' mailboxes.

Story continued below

A quick survey of Democratic, Independent, and Republican voters in Elk Grove, and likely throughout the state, found they received a mailer today urging them to vote no on the proposal to allow redistricting of California's 58 Congressional districts. If approved by voters, the new district maps could eliminate five of the nine Republicans in Congress.

The mailer from the independent group called Protect Voters First (sponsored by the Hold Politicians Accountable Ad Committee's Top Funder, Charles Munger Jr.) includes endorsements from the highly respected League of Women Voters of California. Although that group does not endorse individual candidates, it will take positions on ballot propositions.

The four-page glossy mailer is a prelude to what will undoubtedly be a deluge of mailers, TV commercials, online advertising, and social media postings.

Separately, Elk Grove's representatives in the California Assembly and State Senate, Stephanie Nguyen and Angelique Ashby, vote in favor of the special election.

Locally, if the redistricting is approved, District 3 Republican Congressman Kevin Kiley is considered vulnerable. In 2022, Kiley narrowly won the then newly drawn district, which includes a large rural area that had traditionally supported Republicans.

As reported by the Sacramento Bee, Kiley could face Democratic Congressman Ami Bera. The 2026 elections are now underway.
