Following a closed door meeting, the Elk Grove City Council just announced that City Attorney Susan Cochran has been relieved of her duties.

"The Elk Grove City Council on a vote four-to-one, with Council Member Scherman abstaining, has decided to end the relationship with Susan Cochran Burns," Mayor Steve Detrick read.  Detrick said Cochran's employment would end this Friday.

Cochran, who has been city attorney since August 2007, has been criticized most recently over the so-called Wal Mart loophole that would have allowed the retailer to bypass the city's conditional use permit process.

When asked by Council member Jim Cooper how the loophole was inserted during a special meeting on June 24, Cochran replied "I don't know." (see video below)

Cochran did not attend tonight's meeting.
