UPDATED 4:30 pm

Elk Grove Police arrested a man Saturday afternoon after he allegedly attacked a seven month pregnant lady with a baseball bat.

According to police reports, 27-year old John Collins of Rancho Cordova came to the victim's Elk Grove residence for a child custody exchange and engaged in a verbal argument that escalated into a physical altercation. During the altercation, the suspect grabbed a baseball bat and started breaking the windows of the victim's car.

The victim and and her children were in the car while Collins was breaking the windows. The victim and her children fled the location in the damaged vehicle and called 911.

Collins followed the victim to the parking lot of a local business and continued arguing with the victim. The suspect then armed himself with a baseball bat and struck the victim, who is seven months pregnant, in the stomach.

Several witnesses intervened and tried to get Collins to put down the baseball bat. Officers arrived and took Collins into custody.

The victim was taken to a local hospital. Officers also determined that Collins had sent his victim several threatening text messages.

Collins was arrested then taken to the county jail where he remains in custody on five charges including attempted murder and is not eligible for bail.
