First challenger for the 2020 Elk Grove City Council elections files candidate paperwork

2016 for Elk Grove's District 3 seat. |

With the November 2020 general election less than 18 months away, the first challenger for a seat on the Elk Grove City Council has filed candidate paperwork.

Entering the race for the District 3 seat is Maureen Craft, who filed her paperwork with the Elk Grove City Clerk's office last week. Craft had challenged Elk Grove City Council Member Steve Detrick in 2016 for the same seat.

Detrick first won the seat in 2008 and was unchallenged in 2012. Now in his third term, Detrick has not made any formal announcement on whether he will seek a fourth term in 2020.

Earlier the year, Detrick, who is employed by PG&E, said increased work duties resulting from the Camp and other fires would curtail his activity with the city council. At one stretch, Detrick missed two out of three council meetings.

Following the 2016 election, Craft has remained active in Elk Grove including a critical role in the city's employment diversity audit. Additionally, Craft is a delegate to the California Democratic Party representing the 9th Assembly District and is on the executive board of the Democratic Party of Sacramento County.

When reached for comment, Craft deferred saying she will issue a formal announcement of candidacy.
