Probationer in alleged possession of gun arrested by Elk Grove Police after pursuit

A Sacramento man was arrested after an encounter that included a short pursuit.
Around 10 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, Elk Grove Police observed Steven Simpson, 27, a known probationer, driving a vehicle near Sheldon and Lewis Stein roads. After officers pulled over Simpson, he drove the vehicle into a nearby neighborhood, stopped the vehicle and fled on foot.
Officers observed a firearm fall from Simpson's lap, who then grabbed the gun as he fled. With assistance from the Sacramento Sheriff's Department's helicopter, a perimeter was established.
Simpson was found hiding in a relative's nearby residence where officers found he was found with the gun and a loaded magazine in his vehicle. Simpson was booked into the county jail and has been released.
