An Elk Grove man who was first arrested by Elk Grove Police almost two years ago was convicted in a jury trial that concluded on Thursday, June 13 at Sacramento Superior Court.

Amit Bharth, 42, was convicted on two counts of forcible rape and false imprisonment. Elk Grove Police took Bharth into custody on July 31, 2017.

Evidence introduced in the trial showed that Bharth met his female victim outside a store after she had become stranded. After accepting a ride, the victim was taken to various area hotels over one week and physically assaulted, and raped.

The victim, who has a mental developmental delay, escaped captivity and contacted 911. Investigators gathered DNA evidence that matched Bharth's.

Before his arrest, Bharth was convicted on drug charges, theft, and possession of a concealed firearm. Bharth faces a maximum 20 year, 8-month prison sentence at July 12 hearing.
