Bera hits 50-percent in five candidate field in 7th Congressional District primary; to face Republican Patterson in November

Rep. Ami Bera has reached the 50-percent threshold in the primary race for California's 7th Congressional District primary race according to results posted this afternoon by the Sacramento County Board of Elections.

The four-term Democratic incumbent is being challenged by fellow Democrat Jeff Burdick, Green Party candidate Chris Richardson, and Republicans Jon Ivy and Buzz Patterson. The current results are posted in the table below.

For Bera, the 50-percent threshold means he will be challenged in November by Republican Patterson under California's top-two finisher primary elections. Of significance for Bera, the total Democratic vote is 57-percent versus 39-percent votes for Republican.

Bera, who won by razor-thin margins in 2012, 2014, in 2016, in 2018 he experienced an easier reelection against Republican Andrew Grant winning by a relatively comfortable cushion of 55 to 45 percent.

In 2018 Grant did not have the support of the financial support of the National Republican Congressional Committee, which played a prominent role in 2012, 2014, and 2016 campaigns of Bera's previous challengers. The NRCC is not expected to provide substantial support to Patterson.

Even though Bera has widened his margins, Cook's Political Report still considers the 7th District competitive, but rates it as likely Democratic.

The 7th District is wholly contained in Sacramento County. There are less than 20,000 uncounted ballots in Sacramento County.
