Bera, Cooper easily win reelection bids

Elk Grove's representatives in the U.S. Congress and California Assembly, Dr. Ami Bera and Jim Cooper easily won their respective reelections bids.

The Associated Press called Bera's race against challenger Buzz Patterson last night. Elected to his fifth term representing California's Seventh Congressional District, Bera received 116,437 votes for 61-percent to Patterson's 39-percent with 74,436 votes.

Bera, who won his first three terms starting in 2012 against better-funded and higher-profile Republican opponents by narrow margins. In 2018 he had an easier reelection bid for his fourth term and this year's margin of victory is his largest.

“It’s been an honor to represent the people of California’s 7th Congressional District and I am grateful for the trust voters have placed in me once again," Bera said in a statement.

Cooper, who represents California's Ninth Assembly District and first elected in 201 easily beat Republican Eric Rigard and captured 68-percent of the 106,380 votes counted in the two-county Assembly District.
